PREAMBLE:
We, the men of Frater Sodalis, in order to promote better and
clearer understanding of the policies, positions and duties of
this fraternal organization, bind ourselves to uphold the constitution
as drafted and ratified in March 2002. Upon ratification of this
constitution, all previous constitutions adopted by members of
this organization since its inception in September 1943 shall
be considered null and void.
Article I
Name, Purpose, Motto and Mission Statement
The name of this organization
shall be Frater Sodalis, BETA CHAPTER. The purpose
of the club shall be to promote social relationships, Christian
ideals, and friendship bonds as Brothers Together throughout life.
The motto of the club shall be "pledged to greater service."
The Frater Sodalis mission statement shall be: Frater Sodalis
is committed to building personal value through the pursuit of
EXCELLENCE in personal relationships, health, competitive activities,
academics, and our relationship with God.
Article II
Membership
Membership shall be open to any
male students meeting the requirements set forth by the Campus
Life Office of Abilene Christian University and passing
a two-thirds majority vote of all active members of the club.
Pledges to the club are selected each fall semester on the basis
of scholarship, character, honor and desire to belong. All members, current and pledges, will also pay
dues [see Article VII Dues] in order
to be considered active.
Article III
Officers
The officers of Frater Sodalis
shall be a President, a Vice-President, a brat Dad, a Secretary,
a Treasurer, an Intramural Director, a Historian-Parliamentarian,
a Sergeant-at-Arms, a FundRaiser, a Chaplain, and a Sing Song
Director. If an officer becomes inactive at any point
during the year he shall be given one week to amend or correct the cause of his
inactivity. After the week grace
period he shall be removed from his office and a general election will be held
to fill the vacant position.
Section 1
The President shall preside at all club functions and shall represent
the club at all functions of a public nature, which require the
attendance of a club representative. The President shall have
the authority to appoint all committees, and such chairmen and
directors as needed. The President will be responsible for all
physical articles of the club such as the crest sign, any flags,
silver goblet, milk can, belt, etc
The President shall have
the authority to call meetings. He Shall be a senior with three
semesters in club (brathood counts as one semester). He shall
carry out the rules of this constitution of Frater Sodalis while
conducting any function related to club activities. All official
club functions shall be subject to the express approval of the
President.
Section 2
The Vice President shall assist the club President whenever called
upon and will be the presiding officer in the President's absence.
The Vice-President will be in charge of all socials (except brat
socials) and shall have the authority to appoint such committees
as are needed for those socials. He shall be the coordinator of
exes and shall keep for reference, a file of Frat exes. This file
should include names, brat class, date of Graduation, occupation,
and permanent addresses. Each fall he shall be responsible for
sending a newsletter to all Frat exes concerning the Homecoming
breakfast and activities. Since many of his important duties depend
of past experience, it is suggested that the Vice-President be
a senior member.
Section 3
The brat Dad shall be in charge of the pledges each fall semester.
He should be a senior member with three semesters in club (brathood
counts as one semester). He shall be responsible for everything
to do with the pledges, including the rushes, the coffee, and
any brat Socials (Hay Lay). The brat Dad shall enforce the rules
set down by members for the pledges each semester. It shall be
his personal responsibility to acquaint himself with each brat
during his initiation period, and to report to club whenever needed.
It will also be the brat Dad's duty to familiarize the pledges
with the activities, history, traditions, and constitution of
the club. The brat Dad shall be responsible for acquiring the
use of meeting places for pledging activities.
Section 4
The Secretary shall keep the roll and the minutes of meetings
in order and up to date. He shall serve as official correspondent
of the club in all matters of an official nature. Anything connected
with printed matter that the club might have need of shall be
under the auspices of the Secretary. He shall be keeper of the
club seal and will be in charge of compiling a newsletter to be
mailed to all club members during the summer.
Section 5
The Treasurer shall acknowledge and be responsible for the payment
of all debts contracted by the club. The Treasurer shall be directly
responsible to the club President for all financial affairs of
the club. No individual or committee shall charge or bill anything
to the club without the express approval and consent of the Treasurer.
Any club member or committee who assumes the authority to incur
a financial liability on behalf of the club shall be held responsible
for the payment of the debt incurred. The Treasurer shall keep
accurate and up-to-date financial records, and shall make reports
on the financial status of the club at club meetings, at the discretion
or request of the President.
Section 6
The Intramural Director (IM) shall represent Frats at all ACU
Men's Intramural Department meetings. It is the duty of the IM
Director to be familiar with all of the intramural rules and see
that the eligibility requirements are met for each competing club
team. It is the responsibility of the IM Director to see that
each Frat team keep the high standards of good sportsmanship that
has been characteristic of the Frats throughout the history of
the club and that have been considered acceptable by the officers
of the current year, whether these standards be expressed or implied.
Failure of a member to maintain these standards may result in
the suspension of that member from playing in a particular game
and/or the removal of that player from any future Frat ACU intramural
team. Any punishment that would jeopardize an individual of his
right as a member of the club to play on any Frat intramural team
will be at the discretion of the officers as a whole. In the event
of this happening the individual will have the full right to defend
his actions in a meeting with the officers before any final decision
would be assessed shall be solely in charge of all of the intramural
activities of any team that will represent Frats. This includes
the regular season games, playoff games and tournament, games,
as well as team practices. The IM Director will be the club's
link with the school's intramural program. He will let the club
know about each intramural activity and announce the individual
activities to that each member will have a fair chance to play
on any team that he is capable of playing on. This will be decided
by the discretion of the IM Director and/or that team's captain/coach.
He will appoint a captain/coach for each team and it then will
be that captain's/coach's responsibility to inform their team
about their practices and their games. If any problems arise between
a team and the team's captain/coach that could jeopardize that
team from playing in an intramural event the IM Director will
be responsible for settling the dispute in a manor he sees fit.
The IM Director will still reserve the authority to govern over
each team captain/coach.
Section 7
The Historian-Parliamentarian shall have two main functions. As
Historian, he will maintain a scrapbook of the club activities,
which will be passed on each year to his successor. If needed,
he will help the Secretary and Vice-President in the preparation
of the Summer and Homecoming newsletters. As Parliamentarian,
he shall have the ultimate authority in determining the correctness
of club procedures. The President shall be bound to uphold the
decision of the Parliamentarian. The Parliamentarian shall see
that all formal club meetings and activities are conducted in
conformity to the Frater Sodalis Constitution and to Roberts
Rules on Parliamentary Procedures. He shall interrupt any
procedure not in conformity to the above, and his decision shall
be enforced by the President, or in such case, the presiding officers.
He shall also be responsible for keeping the official constitution
of Frater Sodalis. He shall Prepare and present any revisions
of the constitution to the club for ratification.
Section 8
The Sergeant-at-Arms shall keep order in club meetings. He shall
have the authority to assess punishments to members who are out
of order at a club meeting or activity. He, plus the President,
shall be notified of all activities between Brothers and brats
during the entire pledge period. He should attempt to be present
at all activities, whether planned or spontaneous. He must know
the Texas State Bill No. 24 (on Hazing) and be able to prevent
any accidents involving people and property. It is recommended
that the Sergeant-at-Arms be a second year member in club due
to the one-year experience with the brats.
Section 9
The FundRaiser shall be responsible for bringing extra income
into the club's account through fundraisers and moneymaking projects.
He shall help coordinate a brat Fundraiser during the pledge period,
which will involve both Brothers and brats. The FundRaiser should
also help out the other officers, if needed, when a fundraiser
is not in progress.
Section 10
The Chaplain of Frats will be charged with maintaining the spiritual
focus of the club. His primary responsibility will be to promote
participation of "Frat Church" at the convalescent home
located on Medical Drive just east of Washington Blvd or another
site selected. He shall involve the club in midweek worship service
by having them lead songs, prayers, and devotional thoughts. A
list of who is to do what should be posted and it is advised that
a reminder be given to each participant 3 to 4 days in advance.
The chaplain will also organize club devotionals and contact other
clubs to organize meetings for the purpose of a joint devotional.
Although not exclusive, these two primary tasks are the major
job requirements. It is also suggested that an attempt be made
to further the spiritual growth of the club and its members, through
activities such as home Bible studies.
Section 11
The duties of the Sing Song Director will be two part. The Sing
Song Director will be responsible for the production of the Sing
Song show, and the direction of the show. His duties will include
attending all Sing Song meetings and reporting to the brothers.
The Sing Song Director has the authority to appoint a co-director,
and committees to help in the areas of song writing, costumes,
choreography, backdrop, and any other actions needed for the production
of the show. The Sing Song Director will also be required to check
on the eligibility of the brothers wishing to participate in Sing
Song (Same required as used for being a member). The Sing Song
Director will also have the responsibility to lead club in all
songs, except Drink Milk, at any Frat function. The Sing Song
Director needs to be familiar with how each song starts, and the
proper way to sing it. The Sing Song Director will also be responsible
for teaching the brats the songs during pledging.
Article IV
Qualifications and Election of Officers
Section 1
To serve as an officer in Frater Sodalis, a member must:
(1) have been a member of Frater Sodalis at least one year;
(2) be at least a junior in classification with the exception
of the President and the brat Dad, who at the beginning of their
tenure of office, must be seniors.
Section 2
Elections of officers shall be by a majority vote of active members
present at a meeting specified for that express purpose. Voting
for officers shall be done by secret ballot. Candidates for office
shall be active members as defined by the Frater Sodalis Constitution
and Abilene Christian University. Results for each office shall
be made after each vote, and public announcement of all elected
officers shall be made at the annual spring social. (Luau or Frat
Trip, which ever is last)
Section 3
Prior to each election, the Parliamentarian shall review for the
club members the Constitutional rules on qualifications of officers
and procedures on voting.
Article V
Impeachment
Section 1
If a general consensus of the officers decides that an officer
has not fulfilled his duties, the officers as a group should meet
with him and try to get him to improve his performance.
Section 2
After a reasonable period of time, if the officer has not made
a satisfactory improvement, the President shall have the authority
to bring impeachment proceedings before the club. Adequate discussion
time shall be provided and the officer in question shall be given
the opportunity to speak before the club.
Section 3
Two-thirds vote of all active members shall be required to remove
an officer from his office, and a general election will be held to fill the
vacant position.
Article VI
Sponsors
Faculty sponsors shall be elected
each year by a majority vote of the club, as shall other sponsors
of the club. Incumbent sponsors may be reinstated for the ensuing
year by a majority vote.
Article VII
Dues
The Treasurer on the recommendation
of the officers shall tentatively decide upon a total amount to
be spent by the club during the school year. This budget shall
be presented and explained in detail to the club as a whole. The
proposed budget must be ratified by a simple majority vote of
the total membership present before it is effective. The sum of
the budget shall be divided into equal amounts according to the
number of club members. Each member shall be assessed this equal
amount to be paid as dues. The treasurer and officers shall decide
the amount of dues for brats each pledge period.
Article VIII
Voting
Voting privileges are extended
to all active members. A motion must be made and seconded before
a vote may be taken. Once a motion has been seconded a majority
"yea" or "nea" vote will be taken. The Parliamentarian
will make the decision, if needed, to determine the majority.
Voting on prospective brats and officers [see Article IV on
Election of Officers] will take place by secret ballet. Voting
for brats and officers will be counted by the approved sponsors and will be
witnessed by the President. The President and Parliamentarian
will count the votes and will have an approved sponsor as a witness.
At the discretion of two-thirds of the Brothers, brats may be
barred from voting on any measure.
Article IX
Behavior
All Club members should respect
and uphold high moral standards. The moral values and standards
of the club shall be based upon and determined by those moral
principles set forth in the New Testament, consistent with
the codes and regulations of Abilene Christian University. The
club shall seriously regard deviations from those principles in
the personal conduct of any member.
A member whose conduct greatly
violates the above moral principles should attempt to make redress.
If he should fail to do so he shall withdraw himself from the
club. Should that member not withdraw, he shall be voted out of
the club with a simple majority vote of all the members.
Profanity - the promiscuous referral
to sacred, revered, or intimate objects, entitles, or relationships
- shall not be tolerated. At any club meeting or function, profanity
on any member's part shall be dealt with by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
In an instance of the Sergeant-at-Arms' absence or offense, the
highest-ranking officer present shall assign punishment.
Article X
brats and Brothers
"brats" will be the
name assigned to pledges.
Section 1: Membership
brats shall be subject to the Brothers. No brat shall be initiated
unless at the time of his induction he has at least a 2.0 grade
point average or the required G.P.A. set forth by the Administration
for the semester of his brathood.
At the end of the initiation period,
each brat shall be voted upon individually for acceptance into
the club as a full Brother. A brat shall be accepted when he receives
a two-thirds majority vote from the Brothers favoring him. Should
a brat in his initiation period not receive acceptance by two-thirds
majority vote, he shall be declared permanently inactive. If he
so wishes, he may be completely disassociated from the club. The
voting for acceptance of the brats shall be done by secret ballot.
Section 2: Traditions
1. Traditions shall include brat programs to be scheduled at the
Brothers discretion.
2. Dress including coat, tie, and pin will be worn during the
pledge period and to all meetings, unless instructed by the President
or brat Dad.
3. brats shall appear at regular meetings fifteen minutes before
the scheduled time for the Brothers to arrive.
4. brats must exhibit dress and manners becoming of a gentleman
at all times.
Section 3: Visits
brats are required to have a visit with each Brother whose name
appears on the Brothers list. Each brat will be required to have
a certain number of visits completed each week. Failure of any
brat not having the required number of visits on any given week
will result in punishment to the entire brat class. Each brat
should document each Brother's visit on a separate sheet of paper.
Visits should be kept alphabetized in a clean folder and be presented
at final evaluation for counting.
Article XI
Meetings
Brothers shall be in attendance
at every meeting. Brothers not attending meetings are held responsible
for any information given to the club. Any Brother missing three
meetings without an acceptable excuse shall be declared inactive
until reinstated by the officers. If necessary, a Brother will
be excused from a meeting, providing he has come to answer roll
call.
Attendance at special club meetings
(such as intramurals, Sing Song practices, etc
) shall be
considered obligatory for those who have been committed to attend
by volunteer or appointment. Three unexcused absences at such
meetings may be punished with suspension of active membership,
according to the rules concerning attendance at regular meetings.
No meeting shall conclude without the singing of the traditional
Frat Song.
Article XII
This constitution may be amended
by a majority vote of two-thirds of the active members.
